Taco seasoning mix typically contains a blend of chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, salt, and sometimes red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper for added heat.
If you don't have pre-made taco seasoning, you can create your own blend using common spices. For a typical heat level, combine 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1 teaspoon ground cumin, 1 teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon dried oregano, ½ teaspoon salt, and a pinch of black pepper.
Generally, use about 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning mix per pound of ground meat. Adjust to taste, using less for a milder flavor or more for a bolder taste.
Yes, add about ¼ to ½ cup of water per pound of browned meat after stirring in the taco seasoning. The water helps distribute the spices evenly and creates a saucy consistency.
While water is the most common liquid used, you can substitute milk for a creamier texture. Keep in mind that milk may slightly alter the flavor and appearance of the final dish.
Yes, it's best to drain excess fat from the browned ground beef before adding the taco seasoning and water. This prevents the final dish from being overly greasy.
